  • Abstract
The largely unstudied correspondence on the persona and government of Francesco II d’Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio between 1662 and 1694, confirm the strength of the historical studies that have been pursued over the last 40 years with regard to the d’Este territories within the Italian states of the “Ancient Regime”. The sources document the application of continuous compromises in the Duke’s relationships with local and super-regional powers, for as Francesco was not able to counter them, these powers served to strengthen the juridical/administrative particularisms of the State. In Francesco’s case, even more relevant than the institutional limitations seem to have been his personal bonds of trust, as shown by the rise of the ducal favourite, Cesare Ignazio d’Este. And thus the modest economic, military and political weight of the d’Este duchy within the European context was compensated for through the careful promotion of the image of the d’Este house its terms of its patronage of arts and literature, the very magnificence of the court and the music chapel, which at the same time reflected the Duke’s refined personality.
