  • Abstract
In the late XVII and early XVIII century the courtier service rendered to the Italian secular princes offers many opportunities of prestige and power for the noble men of the Peninsula. In particular, the courtly employment is influenced by the military-knightly ethic that unites the Dukes of Savoy (later Kings of Sardinia), Mantua, Parma and Modena and the Grand Duke of Tuscany to the ancient aristocracies of their states. The most prominent ceremonial, political, military and diplomatic charges are conferred mainly to gentlemen of consolidated nobility and holders of fiefs. However, the still largely personal and patrimonial exercise of the monarchical authority also allows the remarkable rise at court of some homines novi: lawyers, financiers or adventurers... On the other hand, the attendance and the contacts with the courts of different states is favored by the dynastic relations between ruling houses, by the kinship among the nobility, by the bonds of vassalage and by the existence of educational institutions such as colleges, knightly academies and pageries.
