  • Abstract
«Through Religion, Honour and Natural Sentiment». Intimate Correspondence from the House of Rohan-Guémené on the Eve of the French Revolution · The Rohan-Guémené family was one of the most illustrious and powerful dynastic branches of the French nobility during the Ancien Régime, but between 1782 and 1786, its financial failure and Cardinal Louis’s direct involvement in the so-called Affair of the Queen’s Necklace spelled its downfall. A collection of unpublished letters between members of the family dating back to those years allow us to delve deeper into the characteristics of the intimate correspondence of a famous family of the Second Estate on the eve of the Revolution and into the strategies they adopted to restore their social standing.
