• Abstract
  In 1603, Spain started building the fortress of Longone on the Island of Elba, much to the disappointment of the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The fortress, officially built in an anti-Ottoman function, actually created an anti-French belt by militarily connecting the Presidi State to the Island of Elba, with the intention of inhibiting any possible initiative of the King of France towards the Kingdom of Naples, by sea. It was also to act as a counterweight to the Piazzaforte of Portoferraio (Cosmopoli) given the (although temporary) alignment of the Florentine government to French policy.
