  • Abstract
    The period spanning from the mid-sixteenth century to the 1720s was characterised by the influence of sea power on history, and by profound changes in warfare at sea. The fights for the conquest of areas of influence in lands outside Europe dramatically broadened the scope of overseas activities and introduced harsher competitiveness in the antagonism between nations. The transcontinental and transoceanic economy, in which Europe would establish its hegemony, had taken shape.
