The Department of History at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint an Assistant Professor with demonstrable research and teaching excellence on early modern history with particular reference to conflict in seventeenth-century Europe and/or the Atlantic World. You will have a PhD in history, with research expertise and/or teaching experience at undergraduate level relating to the British Civil Wars.
We want to continue to tackle the underrepresentation of marginalised groups in history – whether in staffing, curriculum, research, the public face of history or presence in the classroom. So you will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference to issues of underrepresentation, through your experience, work, ethos, identity, or in some other way.
We believe in an inclusive working environment for all. So we are welcoming, supportive and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values. We want to raise our performance in producing world-class history for a diverse audience of students and scholars. We are, therefore, particularly keen to receive applications from people currently underrepresented in history, such as those of marginalised genders (e.g. women, non-binary, trans), people with disabling conditions, and people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds.
You will contribute to an exceptional education for undergraduates and postgraduates in history and make a full contribution to the Department’s research profile and culture. You will be keen to pursue opportunities for impact, public engagement, and interdisciplinarity. And you will contribute to the administration of the Department – in particular, by championing and promoting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives.
Shortlisting is anonymous: we cannot see any personal data or the 'Additional Information' section in your application until shortlisting is completed. Shortlisting is by criteria-based questions, rather than a CV or letter.
As an Assistant Professor you will be expected to
Conduct individual and/or collaborative research.
Establish a national reputation and regularly disseminate research findings through publications, conferences, and other appropriate media.
Generate grant income.
Contribute to impact, public engagement, and interdisciplinarity.
Deliver innovative teaching and curriculum design.
Provide curriculum within your area.
Contribute positively and proactively to the Department’s teaching culture, especially considering issues of underrepresentation in history.
Supervise and examine Undergraduate, Masters and PhD students
Support tutorial groups, developing their knowledge and learning skills.
Take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students, dealing with sensitive issues.
Be responsible for administrative duties.
This is a permanent, full-time (36.25 hours per week) post, commencing 1 September 2023. Job share arrangements may be considered.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Andrew Cobbing, Head of Department, email: andrew.cobbing@nottingham.ac.uk; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
